Free spinner's tool

Grist calculator.

Measure a length of yarn, weigh it, and find its grist. The truest fingerprint of a hand-spun yarn, in yards per pound and metres per gram.

Tip: a longer sample gives a more accurate reading. A full skein is ideal, but even 20+ yards works.

What is grist?

Grist is a measure of how dense a yarn is: the length you get from a given weight. A high grist means a long, fine yarn; a low grist means a short, heavy one. Spinners use it because it captures something WPI alone can't. Two yarns can wrap to the same width yet have very different grist if one is spun more firmly than the other.

Recording grist lets you recreate a yarn exactly, scale a project up or down, and work out whether you have enough yardage for a pattern before you start. Yards per pound is the traditional spinner's unit; metres per gram is handy for smaller samples and metric labelling.

Save the grist of every skein.

Spindrift records grist, WPI, fibre, and wheel settings for each yarn you spin, so a yarn you love is one you can spin again. Free to download.
